Jet City JCA20H Tube Guitar Amplifier Head

Jet City Amplification is just a baby in the guitar amplifier game, having only been founded in 2009, but their guitar amplifiers are already gaining incredible popularity. Mike Soldano, the mastermind behind Soldano Amplification’s superior amps, has joined with the founders of Jet City to deliver quality amps with excellent tone at an affordable price. Take for instance their JCA20H amplifier head. This single-channel head is extremely simple, but it sounds like a much more complex British-made amp.

The JCA20H puts out 20 watts of power into a 16 ohm or 2x 8 ohm speaker outputs. The sound comes from a mixture of three 12AX7 Preamp tubes and two EL84 Power tubes. The amp also features a solid-state rectifier.

As far as controls, a typical three-band EQ is present, giving you excellent control of your sound. A Preamp knob allows you free-range of gain control, and a Presence control knob lets you brighten up your tone as much, or as little, as you want. A Master Volume knob is standard on the JCA20H, as well.

The simplicity of the Jet City JCA20H makes sure that the all-tube sound is never compromised. The combination of tubes in this great amp, as well as the controls it supplies, allows you to get everything from super cleans to raunchy gains, and for a very affordable price.

Guy’s and Gal’s, Let me tell you that this little head rocks. I got rid of my Fender Twin of 36 years toting that beast around and picked up this JCA20H and I’m not kidding when I say It truly has the stuff to rock. If you want sparkling cleans like a Twin has, you can get it from this amp but it may be just a bit less Twinny as this head is made to crunch. If you turn the volume up all the way and the Gain to 1 or 2 you will get a nice clean chimey almost Fender Twin clean but not quite. It is still a very nice clean sound. Back the volume back to about half and increase the Gain and it get a nice Plexi sound. More Gain and it will crunch nicely. This amp is built tough and quality is good. Mike wouldn’t put his name on it otherwise. He did it right. I’m playing the head thru a ported cabinet I made and installed 2 12″ Peavey Shefield 1290’s and the sound is amazing. I played the head thru several different cab’s at GC, singles 2-12’s and 4×4’s. I prefer the 2-12 cabs with a 20watt head. It just makes more sense and looks better on stage. Before you buy it, try it. Play it with your own guitar and cab if you can. I did. Or plug it into whatever you will be using. It puts out plenty of power for a small venue or if you do as I do you can mike it and it ROCKS!!! Well worth the $300 I spent on it and I don’t have to lug around a Twin anymore.

LISTEN FOLKS, DON’T KID YOURSELF, THIS IS A DECENT LITTLE HEAD, BUT, IF YOU WANT A REAL LITTLE TONE MACHINE… GET YOURSELF A VOX NIGHT TRAIN NT 15 H.THE OWNER OF J AND H MUSIC, AND I , HERE IN HALIFAX, NS, CANADA HAD A CHANCE TO A/B THESE TWO AMPS,AND ALTHOUGH THE SOLDANO DESIGNED HEAD DOES A GREAT JOB OF WHAT IT WAS DESIGNED TO DO,ITS HARD TO BEAT A TONY BRUNO/VOX DESIGN…THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE WITH THE VOX IS HOW MUCH IT SOUNDS LIKE A PLEXI MARSHALL WHEN YOU CRANK THIS LITTLE MONSTER UP. A FEATURE THAT ANY AMP COULD BRAG ABOUT. BUT, OF COURSE, BEING A VOX, IT PRODUCES THE NICEST CHIME IN THE INDUSTRY.THE PORT CITY HEAD AND VOX ARE BOTH GREAT AMPS AND FEATURE SIMILAR CONTROLS.TONE IN GENERAL ARE SOMEWHAT SIMILAR AS IN LOW POWER EL84 POWERED DESIGNS DONT LEAVE A LOT OF ROOM FOR VARIABLE TONE.THAT BEING SAID,THERE SEEMS TO BE A GREAT UPSURGE IN THESE LOW POWER AMPS,AND THEY CERTAINLY DO FILL A NEED IN TODAYS MUSIC. A VERSATILE AMP WILL ALWAYS FIT INTO TODAYS EVER POPULAR ,ELECTRIC GUITAR REPERTOIRE.THE ONE THING I FEEL THAT MANY OF THE SMALLER AMPLIFIERS LACK TODAY IS REVERB.A FEATURE ,THAT IS IN ITSELF, AN INGREDIENT NECESSARY FOR A GOOD ALL AROUND AMPLIFIER.IN CLOSING, YOU CAN’T GO WRONG WITH EITHER OF THESE AMPS, AND THE COST EFFICIENCY IS ANOTHER FACTOR THAT IS DECISIVE IN MAKING THAT ALL IMPORTANT CHOICE WHEN IT COMES TO AN ELECTRIC GUITAR AMPLIFIER.
