The Peavey Triple XXX is a hard hitting 120-Watt amplifier with three distinct channels. The XXX has excellent, easy to use features that make it very versatile. This all-tube amplifier uses three 12AX7 Preamp Tubes and comes standard with four 6L6GC Power Tubes, but is easily convertible to use four EL34s. A great feature that allows for two very different range of sounds and tones. Each of the three channels on the Triple X has its own Volume control, but a global Master Volume control is present, also. This allows you to play at various volumes, without compromising your tone.
As for the three channels, there are Clean, Ultra, and Crunch. While they produce different tones, their controls are very similar. For the Clean Channel, you get a Volume control, and passive Treble, Mid, and Bass controls. Pretty standard for Clean channels. The Ultra and Crunch Channels are obviously the gain channels, with Crunch being the channel with the highest gain. Both channels have their own Volume control, as well as Hair, Body, and Bottom EQ controls. The Hair control changes the amount of hi-frequencies used, the Body control changes the mid-frequencies, and the Bottom control changes the low-frequencies. The Ultra and Crunch channels also have their own gain control.
The Peavey Triple XXX has a Damping Switch on the rear panel that lets you choose from Tight, Medium, or Loose Damping. This is comparable to the Resonance Control on the 5150. When you change this setting, it changes the Volume output, so you will need to keep that in mind.
Also on the rear panel is an effects loop, which can be controlled with the footswitch that is included with this amp. The footswitch also controls all three channels. If you are worried about what cab the XXX will plug in to, don’t fret. Peavey has designed the Triple XXX to work with 4, 8, and 16-Ohm cabs.
